The first trailer has arrived online for Joe, in which Nicolas Cage plays a periodically violent man who strikes up a friendship with Tye Sheridan's abused teen.
A troubled ex-con, Cage's character is attempting to keep his head down and stay out of trouble, but he finds his resolve being tested to the limit by his young friend's brutish father.
However, if that sounds like the platform for Cage to go off on one of his eye-popping, mouth-foaming rampages, think again, as this looks to be one of his finest performances to date.

It looks as though Joe could serve as reminder that when the material is right, Cage can be one of the most talented actors out there. Although credit should also go to young Sheridan, who looks set to prove that Mud was no fluke…
Directed by David Gordon Green and co-starring Gary Poulter and Sue Rock, Joe will open in the UK on 25 July 2014.
